Recognizing the Leadership of Adult Students like Laila Boase

Laila Boase contributed the following article about her experiences of hard work and persistence together with other adult student leaders, largely behind the scenes, in helping move the proposed L.A. City Council resolution forward and out of committee.  On Tuesday, May 29, it will be voted on by the entire L.A. City Council.

PATH TOWARDS A SUCCESSFUL RESOLUTION – written by Laila Boase

It has been a long journey to spread the word on the importance of Adult Education.  It was brought to my attention and thousands of students that Adult Education would be endangered.  I had spoken with Christopher Espinosa who works with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to have him be aware of the fact that LAUSD wanted to eliminate Adult Education.

I was given notice that a resolution was proposed on February 3rd by Councilmember Jan Perry and Councilmember Ed P. Reyes opposing further cuts to Adult Education and opposing the elimination of Adult Education.  I was directed towards the Intergovernmental Relations Committee and Rules of Elections to speak with members on that committee.

We, the adult student leaders, met with Justin Wesson, Legislative Deputy of the President of Los Angeles City Council Herb Wesson, to discuss our concerns and advocate the Resolution be passed in the committee.

We were advised to meet with City Councilmember Tom La Bonge and City Councilmember Jose Huizar, which we did.  We met with Lisa Schechter, Director of Legislation for City Councilmember Tom La Bonge, who gave us great detail about the committee leading us in the right direction.

We spoke to Erick Martell, Legislative Deputy for City Councilmember Jose Huizar, who heard our concerns and life stories that led to a letter of support on the Councilmember’s behalf.  We went through these events gaining huge amounts of support and awareness.

I have kept in contact with Justin Wesson to keep track of possible committee meetings and to keep Adult Education in the light.  I was finally given the good news that Adult Education would be on the agenda for Friday, May 18th.  It is true what they say: persistence is key!!

  1. Thank you, thank you Laila, and all the other students doing the work of defending your right to education. May your success inspire others to join you (and teachers too!). Good luck at City Hall getting that resolution passed.

  2. I’m in awe of this inspiring story. What an example to all of us working class people. You’ve shown that we can change our reality through struggle, and that we need to raise the level of struggle! Thank you.
