Big Evans Rally on February 29, 2012

We had a happy leap day, since we were united as one with students, teachers, and families at Evans Adult School. Several news media outlets including Univision 34 and USC Annenberg TV News (ATVN), covered our demonstration. During lunch time (12:20pm), we gathered at the front of Evans building wearing our Red-T-Shirts. We held our signs on along the side of the street and shouted “Save Our Schools,” and “Yes we can.” Many cars honked to support us. Also, we crossed the intersection in a picket line. Kristen Muha, who works with ATVN, interviewed some of our students, teachers, and principal. Those interviewed spoke about how adult school is so important to young students, immigrant families, single mothers, and our communities. In addition, they emphasized how adult school contributes to to the economy through job training, helping parents, and how it would be unfair to cut. Here are link to the ATVN piece:

Local Students and Teachers Protest Adult Education Cuts

There’s one small problem with the video. The anchorwoman says UTLA members took to the street, but our demonstration was primarily organized by Evans United Adult Students and was attended by students, their families, teachers, administrators, and community.

It shows everyone was united as one, even though the Evans Rally was a just 40 minute demonstration. Adult Students, Teachers, and Community: WE are ONE!

  1. So proud to have your voice aboard helping our righteous fight to save adult education for our communities. Nice work!

  2. Thank you so much for all your hard work and dedication to this struggle. We’re going to need everyone to get involved to keep Superintendent Deasy, Mayor Villaraigosa, Tamar Galatsan, and Monica Garcia from gutting these vital programs and giving the real estate away to their wealthy backers in the lucrative charter-voucher industry.

Keep up the hard work and don’t give up the faith. ¡La lucha sigue!

  3. Yoon I am so proud of you for standing up for such an important fight. You are just the right voice to be heard at this very crucial time. Stay strong….Love, Diane

  4. Great article and photos Yoon! Be proud of what you’ve done – you couldn’t have done this without the help of the adult school you attended! Love – Katie
